OVERVIEW

Located in central Tanzania, Ruaha National Park remains one of the country’s most remote and least visited safari destinations. This vast, unspoiled landscape of towering baobab trees, rugged hills, and open plains offers an authentic and peaceful wildlife experience far from the crowds.

Few travelers venture this far west, but those who do are rewarded with exceptional game viewing in a truly wild and untouched environment. In 2008, Ruaha was expanded by merging with the Usangu Game Reserve, making it Tanzania’s largest national park stretching over more than 20,000 square kilometers.

The park’s dramatic scenery is breathtaking in its own right. Rolling hills and wide grasslands are scattered with ancient baobab groves and rocky outcrops, creating a striking and photogenic landscape. The Great Ruaha River flows along the park’s southern boundary and serves as a lifeline for wildlife, especially during the dry season when animals gather along its banks in large numbers.

Ruaha is home to Tanzania’s largest elephant population, with over 10,000 elephants roaming freely across the park. They share this vast wilderness with buffalo, zebra, giraffe, roan and sable antelope, greater and lesser kudu, and more than 400 bird species. Predators are abundant here, including large prides of lions, leopards, and cheetahs, while lucky visitors may also encounter the rare striped hyena and elusive African wild dog.

Because Ruaha is so expansive and lightly developed, safari drives feel intimate and uncrowded. With only a few camps and lodges in the park, you can enjoy long, relaxed game drives and often have wildlife sightings all to yourself.

If you dream of a truly exclusive safari in one of Africa’s most pristine wilderness areas, Ruaha National Park offers an unforgettable adventure. Contact our safari specialists to begin planning your personalized journey into this remarkable landscape.
